6 Things all Embalmers need to know about COVID-19
- COVID-19 is transmitted by droplet contact only, it is not airborne
- Close quarter infection rate is 0.45% with risk of 10.5% for those living with an infected person (CDC Feb.26)
- COVID-19 is an enveloped virus making it very susceptible to inactivation by a wide range of disinfectants
- It is recommended to increase your embalming solution to a 3-4% minimum for suspected or confirmed cases
- All remains should receive a thorough terminal cleansing using a hospital grade disinfectant, following procedures
- An N95 or greater mask that has been properly fit-tested, should be worn throughout when handling all remains
